Tsosie captures La Fiesta de Indios Rodeo all around

ALBUQUERQUE, NM ? True to his winning form, Burnham, NM cowboy Nelson Tsosie garnered the most money in two or more events among the more than 700 entries at the AIRCA hosted, quad-sanctioned La Fiesta de Indios Rodeo, April 25-27, 2008 in Albuquerque, NM. Tsosie claimed first in the bareback riding event worth $874. Tsosie also placed fifth in the bull riding event, winning $594. With Tsosie?s bareback riding event winnings and bull riding earnings, he won a total of $1,468. As the All Around champion, Tsosie won a cash bonus of $750 for a grand total of $2,218.

All the major event winners at the 3rd La Fiesta de Indios Rodeo received custom trophy jackets. The incentive events and minor events winners received custom trophy vests, according to Edison Bitsui.

After the completion of the 3rd La Fiesta de Indios Rodeo, Chairman Bitsui said ?as long as we are here in the city of Albuquerque, we (rodeo committee) will push to improve the rodeo for the Navajo people. We are happy they walked away as champions of most of the rodeo events especially that they were competing against two powerhouse associations, NMRA and GCPRA in the respective states of New Mexico and Arizona. We are always pleased to have NMRA, GCPRA, AIRCA and CNRA members compete at LFDIR. This is a good start to build up winnings for participation in the Indian International Finals Rodeo as year end top contestants of the respective Indian associations.?

Champion Bates, Jr. leads The All Indian Rodeo Cowboys Association

WINDOW ROCK, AZ - At the beginning of the All Indian Rodeo Cowboys Association’s (AIRCA) 51st year, former Indian world champion Ben Bates, Jr. of Mexican Springs, New Mexico was recently elected to succeed  SHAPE  \* MERGEFORMAT John Boyd, Jr. as the AIRCA President. Bates, who is also an active member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), having earned the right to compete at the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo from the Turquoise Circuit in 2000, will serve as President of AIRCA for the next two years.

Bates said, “I really enjoy the sport of rodeo that I say I will continue to rodeo so long as I can still climb into the saddle. For AIRCA I would like to do all I can during my administration to provide a viable venue for the AIRCA members to raise their knowledge, skills and ability to enable themselves to successfully compete at the next level. I like to see more of our Native American cowboys/girls compete as high as they can in the sport of rodeo while they put the Navajo Nation on the map time and time again.” Bates is no stranger to speaking his hopes for the younger generation because he has “been there and done that”.

Forty-eight-year old Bates filled his permit to compete in the PRCA in 1989 after competing in the AIRCA since he was 20 years old. During his participation in the Indian rodeos with the AIRCA and other associations, he earned the season championship many times, culminating in the steer wrestling Indian world championship in 1998. Bates also qualified to the PRCA Turquoise Circuit Finals Rodeo 16 times further earning the opportunity to dance among the best at the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo. DNCFR invites the season event champions and circuit finals champions from 12 circuits throughout the United States usually in March of each year to Pocatello, Idaho.

Coming from a historical environment of an extended family who has involved themselves in rodeo, Bates said, “My family has been involved from the start of AIRCA, the oldest organized rodeo association in Indian country. My Uncle Francis Bates and father Ben Bates, Sr. both served on the AIRCA Board of Directors back then.” He continued, “My mother Ruth C. Bates provided the support necessary for the leaders to lead the association and I know my family consisting of my wife Beverly and daughter Sunni Raye are there to do the same. I feel I am ready to lead the A-team, the core group that is charged in making every effort to lead AIRCA to even greater heights.”

While the AIRCA team is still being appointed by President Bates, some of the A-Team members for 2008-2009 are Vice-President Tom Boyd, Administrative Secretary Murlee Hollowhorn, Treasurer Brenda Holgate, Public Relations Officer Beverly J. Coho, Central Entry Secretary Wanda Francisco, and Judges Coordinator Al Slivers. The Board of Directors are Harrison Charley (Steer Wrestling), Robert Burbank (Saddle Bronc), Michele Morris (Ladies’ Breakaway Roping), Jerome Pete Sr. (Senior Breakaway Roping), Leonard Williams Sr. and Robert Largo (Open and #12 Team Roping), Harry Smith Jr. (Bull Riding), and Bobbie Clawson (Junior Barrel Racing).

Bates concluded by inviting all interested rodeo sponsors, judges and timers to the AIRCA Winter meeting scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, February 23-24, 2008 at the Navajo Nation Quality Inn, Window Rock, AZ beginning at 8:00 a.m. each day. Bates reassures the public, “I look forward to continuing the strong relationship we have with our fans, our rodeo and business sponsors and contract personnel. We plan to continue the rodeo tradition that makes you happy and thank you for the role you play in its success. Join us.”

SANDERS, AZ – Against a test of strength, speed, leverage and horsemanship, Murphy Yazzie showed he is tops not only in the steer wrestling event but overall, taking the all around title as well since he also entered the team roping event. Yazzie downed his steer in 6.9 seconds winning the event while earning $474, more than any other contestant this past Sunday, April 13 at the AIRCA 2008 Membership Drive Rodeo.

Brad Begay took down his steer in a time of 7.9 seconds, winning $285 and second place. Former world champion steer wrestler and the chief executive officer of the AIRCA, Ben Bates Jr. bailed off his sprinting horse onto a charging steer, then muscled the critter to the ground in 8.0 seconds, winning $190 and third place.

Consistency, teamwork and timing are keys to a successful team roping duo, as demonstrated by Marcos Sells and Erich Rogers as they placed first with $684.   The team of Nelson Long and Angelo Benallie had a 6.6 time for second and $513. Walter Livingston and Darrell Morris won third with $342 in 7.9 seconds. Grant and Duane Skeets rounded out the money winners with a time of 8.1 and $171.

In the tie down roping, Roderick Tso displayed the concentration and athletic ability that have earned him three AIRCA year-end tie down roping titles in the last four years. Tso roped and tied his calf in 13.2 seconds for $260 and first place. Coming in second, Benson Charley earned $172 in 15.6 seconds.

Ladies’ barrel racing is balancing in the saddle with the cowgirl’s hat pulled down low, hiding but also revealing the rider’s concentration as she gives her horse every chance to use its speed. From sixteen girls who rode with speed, power and skill, Greasewood Springs’ Claudia Lors was the fastest with a time of 17.456 for $270. Miranda Todacheenie completed the clover leaf pattern around three barrels in 17.537 seconds winning second and $225. Two time world champion Geneva Tsoularakis crossed the finish line with a time of 17.601 earning $180 for third place. Leeja Bitsoi sped in with a 17.664 clocking and $135 for fourth while Raynelle Holgate, a Navajo Times All Area All Star basketball player finished in the money taking fifth, $92 and a time of 17.703.

Ladies’ breakaway roping event’s defining moment might be when a cowgirl is charging down the arena on a muscular quarter horse, a rope swinging above her head, and eyes focused on a calf running ahead. Times are usually very fast after the third or fourth rodeo of the season. Today, C.J. Tallsalt caught her calf in 5.0 seconds winning $345 while winning first. April Willie, the AIRCA 2005 year-end LBAW Roping champion, had a 5.7 second time, winning $228 for second place.

Three time world champion bareback rider Nelson Tsosie was the leather-tough cowboy on a powerful horse who combined to create an exciting ride scoring 72 points and winning first and $244.

Completing a stylish ride with toes turned out and spurring smoothly, coupled with a hard-bucking horse, resulted in three-time world champion J.R. Hunt winning the saddle bronc riding event with a score of 72 and $260. Another world and AIRCA 2006 year-end champion Ramos Benny came in second taking $172 and 70 points.

Just two to three years ago these little boys were winning the AIRCA year-end and Indian International Finals Rodeo world junior bull riding championships. How time flies. Proving they now belong in the artful but dangerous event of professional bull riding, J.R. Billy and Guytin Tsosie, respectively tied for first with scores of 70 and $323 each. Tustin Daye and AIRCA 2005 year-end champion Derrick Davis tied for third with scores of 69 and $81 each.

In the number twelve team roping event, Walter Livingston with partner Darrell Morris posted a 7.9 clocking for $611 and first place. Team roping duo of Edison Begay Jr. and Zuni cowboy Joey Nastacio made a time of 8.7 seconds while winning $366. T.J. Bitsie and Darrell Morris closed out the money winners with a time of 9.2 seconds and $245.

Troy James and Kyle Moore are now the little boys who are placing in the junior bull riding event. James scored 65 while Moore had a 63, for $131 and $88 respectively.

Junior barrel racers Keleigh Lee and Taniah Nez won $207 and $139, respectively with times of 17.757 and 18.251.

AIRCA senior breakaway roping director, Jerome Pete Sr. was quick and accurate with his lasso. Pete caught his calf and broke away in a time of 5.8 seconds, winning $177 and first.

The next AIRCA hosted rodeo is the 3rd La Fiesta de Indios Rodeo on April 25-27, 2008 at the Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque, New Mexico before the month of May’s six pack rodeo consisting of the Sierra County Sheriff’s Posse Fiesta Rodeo, 2nd Shonto Celebration Rodeo, 28th Keith J. Boyd Memorial Rodeo, Bill Pickett and Jackson Sundown Invitational Rodeo, 41st Ralph Johnson Memorial Rodeo, and the 5th Eagle Ridge Rodeo.
