Indian Cowgirls
Shelli Currie Yellowbird

Profile and biography of
Shelli A. Yellowbird B. Mgt.
Rodeo Administrator, Canadian Indian Rodeo Cowboys Association
YB Consulting and Promotions

Shelli is the current Rodeo Administrator for CIRCA (Canadian Indian Rodeo Cowboys Association) and together with husband Marvin, a former INFR World Champion Calf Roper, operate and administer the CIFR rodeo offices from their home. Through their company, YB Consulting and Promotions, CIFR (Canadian Indian Finals Rodeo) is produced and promoted.

Shelli has done a tremendous amount of work promoting the Canadian Indian Rodeo Regions, cowboys and cowgirls locally, provincially and nationally. Working with the INFR since 1998 she has assisted with the Grand entry, Pre-shows and coordinated Canada Night and the tribute to the Canadian Founding fathers of Indian Rodeo.

As a former cowgirl, Shelli began to rodeo in the Hobbema Rodeo Circuit, C.P.R.A. (Canadian Pro Rodeo Association), C.G.R.A. (Canadian Girls Rodeo Association) and I.R.C.A. (Indian Rodeo Cowboys Association) in Barrel Racing, Team Roping, Calf Roping, Goat Tying, Breakaway and Undecorating. Her personal rodeo highlights were competing in the North American Cowgirls Super Challenge against top North American cowgirls (W.P.R.A. vs. C.G.R.A.) with Canada winning the coveted title; qualifying for the Canadian Girls Rodeo Association year-end finals in Barrel Racing, Breakaway, Goat Tying and Calf Roping; and competing @ Edmonton Northlands Super Rodeo. Shelli was a founding member of the Hobbema Girls Rodeo Association who traveled and competed in the Canadian Girls Rodeo Association throughout the summer months.

Shelli's personal role model was her late dad, Cecil Currie Sr. who was a founding father of Canadian Indian Rodeo and a Sport Hall of Fame inductee. He instilled the same drive and vision in rodeo promotions, marketing and communications that she possesses.

Shelli left the world of competitive rodeo to concentrate on her family and school. Today, she has a Marketing degree in Business Management and is currently the Marketing consultant for her tribe, Samson Cree Nation of Hobbema, Alberta Canada. Son Kacey and daughter Lacey Lane both attend College and University in Calgary, while younger son Kirby was tragically killed by a train last summer. Husband Marvin is a Tribal leader, Chairman of the nation’s Finance, Education, Peace Hills Trust, Oil and Gas and is the President of C.I.R.C.A. After taking one year off, he plans to compete once again in 2003.

In addition to marketing, Shelli also promotes nation prodigies to excel and compete in the fields of music, modeling, dance, art, singing, fashion design and sports. She also finds the time to coach and manage the North American Indigenous Games Team Alberta Jr. Ladies volleyball team who won the coveted gold medal for North America in Winnipeg, Manitoba this past summer. A singer herself, Shelli has sung at the INFR, CIFR, and World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education, Hilo, Hawaii, weddings, funerals and special events. A Christian, she believes in the power of prayer and relies on its influence and healing and chooses gospel music to relax too.

Her goal is to ensure that Canadian Indian cowgirls and cowboys receive the best promotions that they deserve. She is heading to the NFR this December by invitation from Las Vegas Events to discuss her proposal to honor the North American Native cowboys and cowgirls.

Lawrence Crawler

It is with great honor I submit Lawrence Crawler of Morley, Alberta for Rodeo Hall of Fame. He has been rodeoin' for at least 40 years and still has the ability to make it to the 2002 INFR, competing alongside his sons and their sons. Those of you who know him share the knowledge that he is not only a great athlete, but a super person. He is unselfish in sharing his rodeo knowledge and won't hesitate to give you pointers, but only if you ask.

He started out around the late 50's riding bulls, then went to team roping, then decided to specialize in calf roping. He, like most Canadians, is into ice hockey. He has many years of that sport under his belt, and still skates!

The circuits he works are all four Canadian regions, CPRA, and at least three Indian regions in the U.S. All of his children and grand kids are great competitors, pursuing their events with a good spirit and sportsmanship, as he has taught them.
Thanks much. - #1 Oregon Fan

Elmer Scottie Scott

Elmer Guy Scott Sr., Warm Springs, OR.- Known in the rodeo world as "Scottie Scott'. I nominate Scottie to the Indian Cowboy Hall of Fame. Scottie traveled in the rodeo circuit during the Turtle Cowboys Association era. (Early 1900's) Scottie was known on the rodeo circuit as musician (Playing the Guitar, Violin, Banjo, Harmonica and Piano) and a very nice, kind hearted cowboy. He said back in his day of rodeoing, he didn't worry about getting to a rodeo... That came with heart... He said if there was a Big rodeo coming up. He would saddle his horse and go. Scottie always had a nice word of advice to all cowboys close and far.

One of his last trips to the Pendleton Round-up at the age of 96, He was honored. Scottie rode against cowboys such as "Jackson Sundown'. I asked Grandpa one day... What was Jackson Sundown like?..... gramp replied" "Old" .... He was alot older than I ! And He rode Saddle Bronc's in moccasins, he was very quiet, always kept to his self.
Grandpa passed away in September of this year 2002 at the age of 99 years. Ride in peace gramps!

From your many beloved Children, Grandchildren, and Great-Grand children-
With deepest respect,
The Scott Clan,

Shawn Best Sr

Joe Scott Sr

I would like to nominate Joe Scott Sr for the hall of fame. Joe Scott is from Warm Springs, OR. and rode at 2 finals in Saltlake,UT. and 2 finals in Albq,NM. Joe Competed on the Indian Rodeo Circuit, the NRA, Northwest Rodeo Association (now NPRA) The CCA (California Cowboys Association) and later in his years, in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Joe has always been a fun, easy goin guy teasing and joking with everyone he knew on the rodeo circuits (many knew him as a prankster.. always playing jokes on someone). Joe traveled with cowboys all over the US and Canada, In 1993 Joe was retiring from saddle bronc competition and was in a unpredictable accident. Joe's neck was broke and there was too much spinal cord disruption. Joe had a hard time coming back to his normal fun going personality, but he's returned w/ us. Joe is now active in his wheel chair and is helping many young aspiring cowboys to start rodeoing. He and John Hammack put rodeo practices together to help these young riders started, including his son Joe Scott Jr. and I imagine some day Joe Scott III. Id like to mention some of the cowboys Joe travelled with- John Hammack, Buzz Scott,Lee Tom and (the late) Leland Tom, Butch, Frank and Ted Hurtado,Richard, Cecil, and (the late) Oliver Louis,Frank Paz,Sonny James Jim,Joe Moses,Tod Cline. (too many to mention) Joe was featured on the opening commercial of the NBC Wide World of Sports. Warm Springs always supported Joe and all the Cowboys from Home... Hats Off Joe! and to all the nominee's!! CC Scott

Kenny Sam

I would like to nominate Kenny Sam for The Indian Cowboy Hall of Fame. Kenny was an all around cowboy, member of WSIRA, he hailed from Omak Washington, member of the Colville Confederated Tribes. He lost his life at an early age, but he will never be forgotten. He had earned his place among The Best in the world of Indian Rodeo

Tom Three Persons

Jackson Sundown

Jackson Sundown at the age of 53, won the Pendleton Round Up Saddle Bronc riding championship in 1916.

Indian Rodeo News has found a article on the Nez Perce.org web site, we would like our readers to check it out, it is very informative about Jackson's experience as a well known horseman.

Both gentlemen bested previously unridden horses in their bid to the World's Title and both rode their horses to a standstill.

Other World Champion Indian Bronc Riders include Kenny McLean and Tom Reeves

Tom Reeves

Indian Rodeo News recently interviewed Tom.  Currently Tom's web site is down and under construction.  For now feel free to read the interview we did with him and more about his Wild Card Rodeo program.

Kenny McLean passed away on July 13, 2002 at a Senior Pro Rodeo in Taber, Alberta

Kenton Randle

Picture provided by Prairie
Indian Rodeo Association

Whenever the name Kenton Randle is mentioned at any rodeo, contestants as well as spectators tend to sit up and take notice. Randle, is one of professional rodeo's top bareback bronc riders, and has also captured several Indian World Titles at the Indian National Finals Rodeo. Randle, is Métis from Fort Vermilion and is currently battling a terminal illness. Our hearts go out to Kenton, family, friends, and his fans

Charlie Louis

I would like to nominate my Dad Charlie Louis of Vernon, British Columbia, Canada. He is a gold card holder in the CPRA. He has helped many a young cowboy start their rodeo career, being a positive influence and patient teacher, with a stick to it attitude. He has never won big championships, or been to the national finals rodeo, but he stayed with it like the traditional cowboy, doing it for the pure love of the sport and not the accolades or money. He is what a real cowboy is and I'm proud to call him my father. He rode broncs for more than 25 years, and team roped until he had his first stroke, he still rides the range with other members of our family moving herds of cattle and cutting studs and calves and the odd dog or cat. Boyfriends don't like those stories. Now he supports my brother Leo and other nephews, nieces, other extended family members, and other young people in their pursuits of rodeo excellence.
He is not perfect or led a life without his mistakes but he is a cowboy. We love him as he is.

my Dad Charlie Louis) is the second oldest son of 15 kids 9 brothers and 6 sisters.  At one time, all nine brothers were rodeo'ng together.  He is retired from rodeo, but is still involved in other aspects, whether its helping a young man crack out his first Bronc or bull, or making a pair of Bronc chaps, bullriding chaps, Bronc halters, but mostly as a saddle maker, he repairs all leather goods and makes spur straps, headstalls, breast collars, stirrups and all other equipment necessary to rodeo.
His brothers are Mike Louis oldest cow penning) , Robert Louis team roping), Howard Louis rancher), Frank Louis former team roper) , Oliver Louis(deceased)(former world champion Saddle Bronc Rider), Cecil Louis team roper/rancher),  Blane Louis(team roper/rancher), Von Louis team roper). - still involved in rodeo Son - Leo Louis team roper), Nephews/Nieces, - Jay Louis( All Around Champion-Bronc Riding, Team Roping), Ben Louis(Bronc Rider/Team Roper/Stuntman), Jackson Louis Team Roper), Bobby  Louis(Team Roper/Bull Rider), Melissa Louis Barrel Racer).  At one time My grandpa  Ben Louis even tried team roping at the young age of 74 or 76 have to check the age.

Rebecca Louis #1 Rodeo Fan!

Larry Condon

World Champion Indian Bull Rider

I would like to submit Mr. Larry Condon, from Omak Washington.
Larry is world wide known as a Champion Indian Bull Rider.  Us rodeo fans up here in Keller Washington feel that Larry should be a member of the Indian Rodeo Hall of Fame.

Hat's off to you Larry your fans up here in Colville Country.

Cowgirls

Shelli Currie Yellowbird

Ms. Sammy Thurman

I nominate Ms. Sammy Thurman-California Native American *  Sammy Thurman the  1965-66 WPRA World Champion Barrel Racer to the Indian Rodeo Hall of Fame.  Sammy is proud to be a native american and a Tough and true champion in Rodeo and in the Women's Professional Stuntwoman's Assoc..  Sammy was one of the first women to put together a Barrel Racing School.  In the 60's  and today.....She was the most awesomeness cowgirls I know.  I nominate her because of how tough she is and strict to the true cowgirl way of riding.   She was one of Cotton Rosser's toughest hands he had on his string, she was a pick-man in the rodeo arena....  Now If that isn't tough......  Someone tell me tough!

C.R. Begay

Would like to nominate C.R. Begay into the Cowgirl Hall of Fame.  C.R. was a champion barrel racer in her younger days, as well as an accomplished Team Roper and Breakaway Roper.  She was the 1st ever Cowgirl to win the All-Around title at a rodeo.  That was at the Pi-Ume-Sha All-Indian Rodeo (don't remember the year), in Warm Springs, Oregon.  She won the barrels that year, plus won the team roping and placed with her other partner in team roping.
These days, she dedicates her time to her son, daughter and nephew.  They all 3 rodeo, as well as participate in High School/Jr High School sports (volleyball, basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball, etc.).

Cattle Ranchers

S-Y Cattle Company
Warm Springs Oregon

I am nominating S-Y Cattle Company of Warm Springs, Oregon. This company is owned and operated by Sammie Squiemphen-O'Reilly, and Priscilla Squiemphen-Yazzie, Tom O'Reilly and Edison Yazzie.

They have been riding and roping since they were knee-high to a grasshopper. They are well known throughout WSIRA and other regions. Sammie and Priscilla (as well as CR, Val and Earlynne, Lawrence)) raised and broke their own horses for rodeo. Their
parents, Earl and Rita helped start the company with a couple head. Rita and Earl owned the 10- (Ten Bar) Rodeo Company in the 1970's which provided stock for northwest rodeos.

The company has greatly grown since 1996 due to hard
and dedicated owners. This family has many championships under their belts, too numerous to mention (due to bashful people). They hold down full-time jobs in addition to tending to the herd. TJ, Amanda, and Chance are starting from scratch (children of these families). They're into rodeo already, riding, ropin'', barrels, gymkhana. These kids aren't just in rodeo for "rhinestone" purposes. They actually live the life of cowboys on the ranch.
Forgive me for submitting your name, S-Y, I know how bashful you are. - Ginger

Horses

John Colliflower Bull Dogging Horses

We would like to nominate John Colliflower Sr. Bull dogging team, because every where we go every one is mounted on them, and WINNING!!

These horses, have it in them' to win. It takes a lot to run One time at one rodeo, but they  ran Three or more times in one event at One rodeo... They are very well trained, and have very good breeding...

With much thought the Dixey family in Idaho...

We would like to see a feature story on them... And the Owner... Thank You!!

Indian Rodeo News reporter Lizzie Dixey will be doing a interview with John Colliflower Sr. about his fine horses, and she will get the names of the horses too!

Rodeo Stock

"Indian Killer"
"Fays Pet"

I nominate The Saddle Bronc Horse- "Indian Killer" This buckin horse originally came from Oregon.... And was sold in Washington..... Actually wound up in the Flying Five String....... Any Saddle Bronc Rider from the Pacific Northwest WILL know this horse.
And also Fays Pet, A rank Bull from the Ross Avery string from Redmond Oregon, This Rodeo Co. changed owners: The Sombrero Rodeo Contractors, Redmond/Sisters, Oregon.
These two are outstanding in my memory of Indian Rodeo in the Northwest...
They deserve a pat on the back! Stock Contractors - Flying Five, Ross Avery Rodeo Stock, Sombrero Rodeo Stock Contractors
