When did you start an interest in rodeo? My husband’s daughter was barrel racing when we got together. I watched her run at Warm Springs and decided I wanted to try….
What is the funniest thing that you have seen or experienced at a rodeo? In 2007 @ the Columbia River Circuit Finals. The rodeo committee had built a fancy new building for us to warm up in … but the lights were not installed, so Barb West went back to her trailer and got a ‘head lamp’ to wear on her hat. Kelly Kamm’s horse was jumping around scared to death of the strange light. Debbie Stahls husband drove his pick up over to shine lights on us … there I was with my black hat, dark jacket riding my little black horse with the ropers and barrel racers – it still makes me laugh.
What was the best rodeo to win? Winning White Swan All Indian Rodeo two years in a row – It the only rodeo I ever attended until I was well into my thirties. My Uncle Burdette Kent was one of the original board members.
What advice would you give to Indian youth who wanted to participate in rodeo but didn’t have the resources or support to get involved? People use to come to the Yakama Reservation to buy horses and play polo, because the Yakama’s were great horsemen and stockmen. Remember your heritage from your family, not from the governmental experts that come to the reservation. Patient determination, it may be load or quiet but as my dad told me, “surprise them keep showing up.”
Are their any songs that inspire or pump you up before you ride or rope? When my husband Steve and I are traveling we try to listen to positive, fun music. Late at night we listen to Coast to Coast with George Norrie – aliens, space ships, big foot…
Oh yes my favorite song and group – Rascal Flats, My wish
What are/is your favorite western movie(s)? Does Shrek count? OK then John Wayne – The Cowboys
What is your favorite music?
What was your most memorable ride or run? Pendleton 2009 Dakota is so gutsy and versatile. She can run over the grass, through the mud, in a big pen or a small building. She just loves her job.
Who is your all time hero? Jane Wooster, she is a CPA, a cattle rancher and loves Easy Jet horses. A t a time in my life when I was lost, she saw the good and potential in my soul and encouraged me to go to return to school to get my CPA. I was 33 years old.
Would you like to thank sponsors and or anyone for your success in rodeo? I would like to find a sponsor, Dakota and I qualified for DCNFR in Pocatello April 2010, a few of my loyal friends are encouraging me to take the plunge and make a run at the spring rodeos i n Texas and the southern states. At Salinas this year a NFR qualifier came up to me and commented about how nice Dakota is – she saw our run at St Paul. She said it best…”She (Dakota) has always paid her own way.” So yes I would like to thank Dakota for packing me to so many pay windows.
