When did you start an interest in rodeo? I’d have say when I was about 15 years old, rodeo started from- Jr. Rodeos, High School Rodeos, College Rodeos and then- I am a professional now.

What other sports other than rodeo do you enjoy   I like to do a bit of everything, At the winter rodeos we go skiing,  My wife is an avid skier, we like to do that together..-  Fish… Now that’s what I like when I’m rodeoing, we try to stop anywhere for a few hours.  When we go to Calgary,.. oh.. in July.  We stop the entire way up there, my wife’s family have a cabin and spot to fish so we try to stay and fish for a bit.  I love to fly fish, now that’s fun…  I made a spin reel for my friend, but; I really enjoy fly rods, and fly fishing… chuckles…

 Okay…  Jason Loves to fish!

What is the funniest thing that you have seen or experienced at a rodeo?  Gee, Ive seen a lot of funny things while traveling…   They kind of run together.. I’ll have to think on that..

Okay, we’ll come back…

What advice would you give to Indian youth about rodeo or anything in general?   You know all sports are kind of similar,… Rodeo, Basketball, Baseball, -shoot.. But Rodeo…  It is a mind over matter sport.  Make up your mind to do it and follow your dreams, endeavor your goals, set high goals; Don’t let anyone tell you- “You cant achieve em”  It’s possible.. reach for your goals .. ”Look where I’m at”…  go to a good rodeo school; don’t be afraid to ask questions.  And practice… use what you learned at a rodeo school at practice… another thing … don’t be afraid to go to a brush up school.  I have…

What advice would you give to Indian youth who wanted to participate in rodeo but didn’t have the resources or support to get involved? Don’t worry about- “What anyone else wants or thinks..  Find what you want to do.. What you dreamed of doing all childhood… School, Work..  Just put it all in what you want.. “Don’t let anyone tell you can’t” or any different..  The types of people that are successful (from my observation) – “Don’t worry about what other people think”..  What they are doing in life or anything…. They succeed…   well… that’s what I see.  From college professors to my hero’s…

Are their any songs that inspire or pump you up before you ride or rope? No, Not really….  There are guys that like really loud rock music.. but..  I’ve found, I compete better  when Im calm and relaxed.

What would you like to see more of at PRCA Rodeos?      I see a few good changes already… One- by limiting the number guys able to enter more lucrative events… in which were competing for prize money-which is spread out quite thin… In contestant numbers/Stock..   “I mean a guy just getting his permit… has to roll in a Big Rodeo…  Then while he’s at that start out rodeo… he’s competing against wolves – a wolf pack- “I mean guys that have won the World Championship a few times….  I think- What rodeo has to do- is somehow- make it fair to the Start out cowboy, and the guys, I mentioned .. The guys that have set their mark… I had to do it.. like how guys are doing.. not everyone in your traveling group get entered… And then you have to try to make all the littlest of shows… and “It’s hard”  I had to do that… It can be over whelming, and exhausting… Gee …   I think’  Bigger prize dollars… Better Stock.. Fewer Rodeos…  The price of fuel….  Were all picking and choosing….  And then you have to abide and accommodate sponsors for public relations/marketing purposes… We sign contracts… I do see improvements…

What are/is your favorite western movie(s)?    Jerimiah Johnson

What is your favorite music? I like a bit of everything .. but I like some of the newer rock…  But, you can find my pick-up tuned into an old  a.m. -old School Country station here in Prineville…   Chuckles..  I get ribbed for it…

I know that station…  I grew up listening to it…  KRCO am.

What kind of food do you like to eat while you rodeo? I’ll eat anywhere… while traveling… but I like Mexican food… Breakfast burritos and at dinner…   But nothing beats a nice beefsteak dinner…

What is your favorite pastime while traveling?  A little of everything…  You know fish..  I like to fly fish..  I’ll just stop and fish a bit…  In between-  Nampa, Id and Calgary rodeos.. We water skied, that was a lot of fun…

What was your most memorable ride or run?    Wow…  I’d have to say…  Calgary Stampede..  I made the bonus round…  And I drew “Alley Trails” That’s  one heck of a good horse…  This is when I had to test my cool.. be relaxed – Only, some 4 guys-1 Horse- –against you… and -$100,000.00 bonus up … I won!     It’s one “Great Rodeo” and the entire week was “Great” …  That just comes to mind… Of- Best Ride!  As of right now…

Who is your all time hero? Clint Corey -  I look up to him so highly, Clint helped me so much in my career…In High School, I attended one of Clint Cory’s Bareback Riding Schools, .. In college he kept up with all of his students… And to learn from such a Bareback Rider,…  And the…  I was fortunate to travel with Clint prior to his retirement… Man… I went back to a school for bareback tune up/brush-up with Clint Corey.

What Cowboy or Cowgirl has influenced you to rodeo?  My Cousin from Washington State-    Brian Sangster – I watched Brian- Jr. Rodeo, High School Rodeo ,College and Pro-Rodeo’d- So when I wanted to get started… He gave me my first Riggin and Gear..

Would you like to thank sponsors and or anyone for your success in rodeo? Justin Boots, Wrangler, And Barstow Rodeo Equipment!  Thank-you!    And Thank you, Carmela…  Thank you Indian Rodeo News for this interview

We will be following Jason Havens through out his Rodeo Career -  God Bless Jason and Family!
