United Indian Rodeo Association Cowboys and Cowgirls qualify for Indian National Finals Rodeo
(INFR) United Indian Rodeo Association (UIRA) held their year end finals at EOP Charging Home Park over the past week-end to crown their champions for the year 2004, and also decide the sudden death champions. Contestants were competing for cash along with a chance to participate at the Indian National Final to be held this October in California. Cowboys and Cowgirls have been competing since early May at Indian Rodeos through out Montana to accumulate points in hopes of making it to the INFR rodeo in California. > >The year-end
Champions were those contestants with the most points at the end of the year, and the sudden death
Champions were the buckaroos, ropers, and barrel racers who won the average on two head at the finals. The sudden death champions were decided on who ever had the most points on one or two head of bucking stock or the fastest time on two runs in the timed events. > >Livestock at the finals was provided by local stock contractors here on the Blackfeet Reservation. Mouse Hall provided the bucking horses, Chancy Kittson and Rick Whitford the bulls, and Dan Bird, Ryan Conway, Mike Tatsey, and Tell Micheals furnished the timed event stock. > >Cowboys and Cowgirls earning a trip to California to compete at the INFR are as follow. > >Bareback Riding R-lynn Little Dog and John Salois, Steer Wrestling Dan Connelly and Nolan Conway, Saddle Bronc Riding Clarence Gilham and Rick Whiteman, Calf Roping Darrel Watson and JC Guardipee, Ladies Barrel Racing Shanna Johnson and Misty Tatsey, Ladies Breakaway roping Megan Lunak and Katelyn Loring, Bull Riding Greg Louis and Doug Fitzgerald, and Team Roping Dustin Bird-Jim Cole and Neil Tatsey- Mike Tatsey. > >Jr. Event Champions for 2004 were Seth Fenner year end and Dakota Louis finals champion in Boys Steer Riding, Katie Boggs year end and Mariah Kipp Finals champion in Jr Barrels, and Casey Bird year end and Ryle Whitford finals champion in the Jr. Breakaway. There are no Jr. events held at the INFR but, in the near future these young champions should be making it to then INFR. > >The UIRA would like to thank all those who helped make the 2004 finals a success. With a special thanks to Steve Conway for loaning the tractor to work the ground. And another thanks to Dale Bird for putting up the Bull Riding purse for the finals. > >Information provide by Ted Hoyt

These Rodeos may still happen not real sure it will be pretty short notice if they do. I will try and keep everyone posted if they do. > > > >You can enter the Brocket Rodeo on your UIRA card if you want again very short notice, the points for this rodeo do not count for UIRA. > >You can enter through the central entry in Browning, 406 338 7684 on Monday 26th just leave entry on phone. > > > >Looks like Rocky Boy and Fort Hall may be the last chance to get points before the finals. > > > >Not sure how much will be added at the UIRA finals this was a Rodeo that last year we added $50 per event per day and the UIRA still lost $2400 putting the finals on. Rule for the finals will be the same as last year if you win the finals and the year end you must go as the Finals Champ. Who ever is next in line in the standings will then get to go to INFR. The secretary of the UIRA will then turn in the results so that Year end champ will get last run at INFR. Newsletter #2 updated July 28, 04
Lodge Grass Rodeo has been approved and it will be on July 3, there will be more information in this newsletter. Hub Mad Plume will be on July 4, and there will also be more information in this newsletter. Hopefully this is not to short of notice for contestants over the 4th. I talked with the Lodge Grass Rodeo committee on Saturday the 12th. My pickup broke down in Billings so had to wait until Monday in Billings to get it fixed, then it broke down again by Belt Mt. so it has taken me about three days to get home from Billings with the Tedster and horses. > >I will have a list of current standing at North American Indian Days Rodeo for anyone wanting to see how their doing for the year. Not sure if everyone has turned their tickets in for the cash drawing but, we will be having another drawing in Birch Creek for $200. Darcy Skunkcap was the Lucky winner at the Sam Bird Rodeo. There still is a possibility that the Crow Fair may be approved, hopefully will know more in the next few weeks. > >Blackfeet Stampede park has been renamed in honor of Chief Earl Old Person. The work Chief Old Person has done for the people of the Blackfeet Reservation over the years and continues to do is a strong testament to Earls character and believes. As Cowboys and Cowgirls and also members of the Blackfeet Tribe I believe we owe a great debt of graduate to Chief Earl Old Person for all his hard work. Naming the new Rodeo Grounds and Race Track in his honor was a good thing to do. The new name for the Rodeo and Race Track will be EOP Charging Home Park. > > > >Lodge Grass Rodeo @ Lodge Grass MT July 3, more in this news letter > >Hub Mad Plume Memorial @ Stampede Park July 4, more in this news letter > >Indian Days Rodeo @ Stampede Park July 9-10, more in this news letter > >Stand Off Rodeo this is a duel sanctioned Rodeo points count. > >Rocky Boy Rodeo @ Rocky Boy July 30, more in next news letter > >Zelda Kitson Memorial @ Stampede Park, More information in next newsletter. > >UIRA Finals not sure of Location but, here is the Dates for sure August 28th and 29th. > >Bull Riders here is the heads up on the Browning Indian Days Rodeo if you do not have a UIRA card you have to send your Money in early to UIRA (Ted Hoyt), HC91-B12, Cut Bank, MT 59427, fees must be at this address by June 27. Fees at this Rodeo will Be $105 in all Major events. We had 42 bull riders enter last year and only 18 showed up to compete. Planning on 42 bull riders and only 18 show puts a financial burden on your rodeo committee along with your stock contractor. I realize this newsletter only goes to UIRA card holders but, maybe the UIRA Bull Riders can put the word out to other Bull Riders when traveling the rodeo trail. > > > >All kids wanting to participate in the youth rodeo you must pre enter the same call in dates as Indian Days Rodeo. The top twenty contestants in each event after Fridays Slack will come back on Saturday and Sunday. 20th - 11th times will compete on Saturday, with the top ten competing on Sunday. On Friday evening of the 9th at 6:00pm we will run the senior Rodeo and half of the rough stock cowboys. U.I.R.A. Newsletter > >The 2004 rodeo season got off to a good start at the Spring Bust Out Rodeo in Browning. We sold 86 cards not sure of the break down on these cards yet (how many were Sr.,Jr., or Highschool) also sold 12 permits. Thinking we will sell another 30-40 cards at the Sam Bird Memorial. A very good first Rodeo I thought, with the team roping getting very interesting towards the end. You will need to have your card purchased and paid for by May 21, 2003 if planning on going to White Swan. More on White Swan at end of newsletter. > >The 2003 banquet will be held at Discovery Lodge in Cut Bank on Friday May 28 @ 7:00 pm. We have a pretty small budget for the banquet so its going to pretty much be a rib steak and potato meal. We will be charging $15 a plate for adults, and $5 a plate for kids. The management at Discovery Lodge asks that all parents keep their kids out of the CASINO!! We will start feeding elders right at 7:00. If you are excepting and award you must be wearing Cowboy Hat and Cowboy Shirt or you will be fined the amount of your prize both Cowboys and Cowgirls. > >Rough stock cowboys I seen a lot of cowboys and kids carrying around beer behind the bucking chutes. You as Professional Indian Cowboys need to tell your friends and fellow contestants there is no Alcohol allowed behind the chutes. I have put in the Indian Days budget for a security person to help keep kids and beer or twisted tea drinkers out from behind the chutes. I know this is kinda calling the kettle black cause for 20 years I could get as drunk as anyone at a rodeo. I think times are changing, I know for a fact if some of these young cowboys want to make it to another level in their rodeo career being around or involved with alcohol will not help them. > >Cowboys and Cowgirls in general I have been stressing for two years that you must wear a cowboy hat and shirt while in the arena. This means even when you warm up your horses before the rodeo. So at the Bird Memorial all directors will be turning in a list of contestants who break this rule, and they will be fine $30. The gate at the Spring Bust Out rodeo was $1,000, you take in to consideration we added $2100, paid around $1,200 for stock, you run these numbers and you can see it very hard to make money at putting on a Rodeo. That is why we need you young cowboys who walk around with baseball caps and sport tee shirts to start representing yourself as cowboys. The UIRA is marketing cowboys and cowgirls at these rodeos we are selling the cowboy way of life to the spectators, fans are not wanting to see a bunch of baseball caps in the arena. I believe we have kinda lost are fan base here on the Reservation. According to my figures each cowboy or cowgirls has to bring in 8-10 paid > spectators to watch them compete for a rodeo committee to break even. I count my mom and dad, girlfriend, daughter, cousin Tony, and three sisters that come to watch me. My girlfriend probable goes to watch her son, and my dad & mon don’t stay long enough to watch the team roping. We all need to work together for the future of Indian Rodeo to increase the fan base. > >All contestants must pay fees at beginning of the Rodeo, you can not wait to see if you win something and then say hold it out of my winnings. The ladies in the office can do the payout if they know everyone is paid up. If you win and want your check back we will give you your check back. This is a rule and it just makes things a whole lot less complicated if you pay your fees before the rodeo starts. This may become the Brad Robinson rule, Brad competed at the finals last year and then bolted without paying more or less saying the UIRA can go to hell. > >The tractor we were using to work the arena was vandalized at the rodeo. The UIRA is more then likely going to end up having to pay $500 or $600 for a new tractor window. We have an idea of who the bad guy was and were asking his parents to make restitution, not sure what is going to happen. I want to thank Steve Conway for loaning us the tractor and hopefully we will have it fixed very quickly. This brings up the topic of parents needing to keep a little better eye on their kid’s at the rodeos. You must remember that anything can happen at a rodeo, especially if the kids are playing in the infield or on race track (bull get lose, horses can kick or run off, uncontrollable horses, and a few drunks driving around). Also when kids get a certain age they tend to bunch up and raise a little hell. We have a very nice Rodeo Grounds in Stampede Park and we ask that all people involved in rodeo help keep it that way. > > > >All contestants remember that the Sam Bird Memorial Rodeo closes early and is Cash only, entries are open May 17-18 @ 406-873-2911. > >White Swan rodeo June 5th and 6th will be duel sanctioned so you will need to have your card paid for by May 21. There is $800 added in all major events at White Swan. Books for White Swan open May 24, Books close May 25, 2004. Hope everyone had a good
winter its feeling more like summer today. But you know what they say
about the weather in Montana, if you don’t like the weather just
wait a few minutes and it will change. With that little tid bit of
information I hope we get good weather for some of the up coming
spring Rodeos. All though were sure going to need some moisture in
this area at some point I would just as soon it be rain now but you
never know. > > > >Here is the Information on the Spring

>The Sam Bird Memorial UIRA Indian Rodeo will be on May 29, 2004.
This rodeo will take place at the Dan Bird Arena. A couple of things
everyone should know about for this Rodeo. It is Cash Only and the
entries close Two Weeks early. Entries Open May 17-18 from 6:00 p.m.
to 10:00 p.m. I would also like to thank the Sam Bird Rodeo Committee
for having a one day UIRA rodeo. Thank You! There will be a poster
enclosed in this newsletter on the Sam Bird Memorial Rodeo. > >
> >Not sure what is happening on the Browning Indian Days Rodeo,
been trying to get an appointment with one of the council men to see
if they can shed any light on what they have planned if anything. I
heard the Tribe may be trying to have a PRCA rodeo that weekend. My
personal opinion is I would like to see a PRCA rodeo in Browning, just
not Indian Days weekend. This is what I do know on July 4, 2004 the
Hub Mad Plum Memorial Rodeo has been approved. There will be more
information on this rodeo in next newsletter. The UIRA is glad to have
this rodeo committee back working with us after the screw up we had
last year. We are thankful that the people in this rodeo committee is
giving us another chance, we will be working with this committee to do
all we can to help. > > > >The Rocky Boy rodeo committee
has contacted me and got their rodeo UIRA approved for the week end of
July 31, and August 1, 2004. They are going to have a long go on
Saturday with the top ten on Sunday. This Rodeo will have $2000 added
per major event. This was a very good rodeo last year and with this
kind of money added it should only be better this year. We want to
thank the Rocky Boy rodeo Committee for upping their purse money.
Thank You way to go! > > > >UIRA is having a hard time
getting saddle donors for the year 2003, so it looking like we may not
be having Saddles for 2003. I feel bad for those of you who may have
been first time saddle winners for getting your hopes up, sorry! Its
kinda hard to be working on 2003 for saddles when we should be working
on 2004. > > > >Not heard anything on the White Swan rodeo
but, if it is co-sanctioned I’m sure your going to need a card
before entries close. Remember the card will cost a little more this
spring so better start saving up. Hope everyone is getting themselves
and their horses shaped up for the rodeo season. See you all at the
Bust Out!!! > > > >The price of a card is going to be $150
for adult, $125 if high school, and $100 for Junior. Now remember you
will be given 5 raffle tickets to sell and if you sell them your Card
will have cost the same as last year. I also have a break down of the Calendar
Raffle enclosed in this news letter. Also remember who ever sells the
winning ticket on Sunday of Indian Days will win $100.
