Donovan Yazzie Tops 511 Entries at the Navajo Nation Aho hai Days Rodeo
WINDOW ROCK, AZ – True to his winning form, Coyote Canyon, NM cowboy Donovan Yazzie garnered the most money in two or more events among the 511 entries at the Navajo Nation 4th of July Aho hai Days Rodeo on July 2 and 3, 2004. Yazzie claimed second in the calf roping event worth $636. Yazzie also placed fourth in the steer wrestling event winning $518. With Yazzie’s calf roping winnings and steer wrestling earnings, he won a total of $1,154. All the event winners at the third AIRCA Summer 2004 Xtreme Native Tour Rodeo received Navajo vendor Nelson Yazzie champion trophy buckles. In support of the Navajo Nation leadership’s push to “Buy Navajo”, AIRCA contracted 100% with Navajo stock contractors and other Navajo contract personnel for this rodeo.
In the steer wrestling event Marvin Salway was the big winner. Salway pinned his draw in 5.6 seconds. The first place finish earned $1,073. Brandon Bates downed his steer in 5.7 seconds for second place honors and $888. Tronnes Birdinground dogged his steer in 6.3 seconds, good for $703 and third place. Fourth place went to Yazzie with a time of 6.7 seconds and $518. Willard Henry placed fifth with a time of 7.9 seconds and $333. Dave Becenti rounded out the top six with a time of 8.4 seconds and $185.
Two-time Indian National Finals Rodeo (INFR) World Champion Calf Roper Garrison Begay rode the outstanding roping horse “Bailey” and together they roped and tied their calf in 10.2 seconds for $849. Aho hai Days Rodeo 2004 All Around cowboy Yazzie, also with “Bailey” claimed second with a time of 10.5 seconds and $636. Nelson Long made a noticeable come back to rodeo with a 10.6 second run for earnings of $424 to finish third. Benson Charley finished out the money winners in the calf roping event with a time of 11.2 and $212.
Victor Begay and partner Dewayne Robbins finished their run in 5.2 seconds and $2,208 to place first in the team roping event. The team roping duo of John Boyd, III and Bennie Bitsui claimed second place with a time of 5.3 seconds and $1,920. Dennis Begay and Doyle Yazzie collected $1,632 with a time of 5.4 seconds for third place. Nate Blackrock and James Begay, Jr. and the team of Earl Dixon and Ryan Sells all stopped the clock at 5.7 seconds and took home $1,200 per team for fourth and fifth places. Wes Dayzie and Jeremy Alcott took sixth place with 5.9 seconds and $768. Taking seventh place were Darrell Morris and Kyle Reed in 6.5 seconds with $480. For the final money winners, roping partners Truman Dickson and James Bitsui roped their steer in 7.2 seconds, winning $192.
The added attraction #7 incentive team roping found Trent Dickson and Truman Dickson on top with a time of 8.2 seconds and $863. The team roping duo of Delvin Nez and Ronald Caboni took second with 8.3 seconds and $719. Coming in third were Justin Antone and Brooks Dahozy with a time of 8.6 seconds and $575. One tenth of a second slower were Lionel Long and Russ Boyd at 8.7 seconds and $431 for fourth place. In the final hole were Spud Jones and Roy Begay with a 10 second run and $287. Thirteen teams out of 100 teams were successful in going to the pay window in the team roping event.
INFR 1998 World Champion bareback rider Bennie Begay soared to the top on Tsosie Brothers’ “Show Me” with a score of 71 and $582. Gerald Belone scored 67 to tie Harrison Curley for second and third and $291 each.
High school sensation Nelson Tsosie scored 74 points on “Ace Deuces” to take the rodeo’s saddle bronc riding title - he earned $668. Former INFR saddle bronc riding world champion Archie Becenti rolled to a 69-point ride on the white horse “Wasp Nest”. He picked up $501 for second place. Henry Barlowe finished in the money with a 66 score and took home $334 for eight seconds worth of work while placing third. Famous Ramos Benny finished out the top four with a score of 65 and $107.
Among the bull riding entries, Terrance Granger, a young but tough bull rider claimed the bull riding crown by riding to a score of 75 on “Six Guns” and $1,057 at the pay window. Darrell Billie, Alfonso Francis and Loren Kinlicheenie all stepped up to the challenge and landed 72 point scores that allowed them to take home $692 each for second, third and fourth places. Jason Etsitty and Chris Kenneth made the eight-second buzzer in style with 71-point rides that netted each a payday worth $255 for fifth and sixth places.
Former Gallup Intertribal Indian Ceremonial Rodeo All Around Champion and Breakaway Roper, Savannah Begay rose to the occasion to capture the breakaway roping title in a sizzling time of 2.8 seconds winning $806. Roqui Lee had a successful catch in 3.1 seconds and $659 for second place. Debbie Robbins took third with a time of 3.2 seconds and $537. Time event specialists Joy Begay and Brandie Janis tied and claimed fourth and fifth places with times of 3.5 seconds and $335 each.
Kayenta’s Sammy Jo White continued her chase for the AIRCA year-end title and hopeful championship in the AIRCA 2004 Summer Xtreme Native Tour for a trip to the grand finale tour rodeo at the Navajo Nation Fair on September 12 in the barrel racing event. White rounded the cloverleaf pattern in 16.66 seconds to add $840 to her race for the title and first place. Sheila Sells completed the pattern in a time of 16.79 seconds to win $700 and second place. Tamara Anagal won third place with a time of 16.83 seconds and $560. Kendra Henry won $420 with a time of 16.87 and fourth place. Keeping the family tradition, Kayenta’s Teri Rae Yazzie rode to a fifth place winning of $280 in a time of 16.94. All pretty girls on fast horse’s money winning times were fast at sub 17 seconds.
In the added attraction, junior barrel racer Winterblossom Chee completed a thrilling ride to first place, winning $112 in a time of 17.02. Elisha Paul clocked in at 17.27 for $68 for second place. Celeste Charley raced in at 17.49 for $45 and a third place finish among the little competitors who are 12 and under.
In the senior class added attraction events, James Bitsui and partner Roger Gishie made a successful catch in a time of 7.5 seconds for $632 and the 50+ Team Roping crown. Jerri Shabi and Leroy Williams placed second with a time of 8.6 seconds and $474. Roger Gishie and former Arizona State Senator Jack Jackson stopped the clock at 9.3 seconds, good for $316 and third place. Not to be outdone, the duo of Skeet Yellowhair and Herman Tsosie headed and heeled their steer in a time of 10.1 seconds and $158.
The final senior class added attraction event, 50+ breakaway roping produced Robert Dodson and Jack Jackson as co-winners as both spun and won in 3.2 seconds for $171 each. Former INFR World Champion bareback rider turned “super looper,” Wilbur Murphy roped his calf in 3.4 seconds and won $85 and third place.
For the next AIRCA sanctioned rodeo, the Rocking “T” Rodeo of Many Farms, Arizona is scheduled on July 16 and 17. Entries for the Rocking “T” Rodeo are on July 5, 6 and 7, 2004, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6 PM to 10 PM by calling Central Entry Secretary Shirley Lee at (928) 871-2324.
The final two AIRCA approved July rodeos are Central Stampede Rodeo of Chinle, Arizona and the Eagle Ridge Rodeo Productions Stampede II Rodeo of Cornfields, Arizona. The Chinle and Cornfields rodeos are both scheduled on July 31 and August 1, 2004. Entries for the Central Stampede Rodeo are on July 19, 20 and 21, 2004, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6 PM to 10 PM by calling Central Entry Secretary Shirley Lee at (928) 871-2324. Entries for the Eagle Ridge Rodeo Productions Stampede II Rodeo are on July 19, 20 and 21, 2004, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6 PM to 10 PM by calling Central Entry Secretary Alice Dodson at (505) 726-1411.
The fourth AIRCA Summer 2004 Xtreme Native Tour Rodeo is on August 6, 7, and 8, 2004 at the 83rd Annual Gallup Intertribal Indian Ceremonial Rodeo, Church Rock, New Mexico. This is an All Indian Rodeo open to any member and non-member of any Indian rodeo association. There is a total of $22,500 added money or $2,500 per event, double in team roping. There is a long go and short go. Performances are at 2 pm August 6 and 7, with slacks at 8 am on August 6 and 7. Short go is on Sunday, August 8, at 6:30 pm. Entries are now open. Contestants can mail in entries in money order payable to the Gallup Intertribal Indian Ceremonial Rodeo. Entry fees of $100 per event, double in team roping shall be paid in full, together in team roping and post marked on or before July 26, 2004. Send your entries (no checks accepted) to the attention of CES Alice Dodson, P.O. Box 1892, Gallup, New Mexico 87305.
